Elephant Sanctuary April 2010

We went to the Elephant Sanctuary in Hartebeespoort where they rescue Elephants, rehabilitate them and then re-introduce them into the wild, they do this by forming a new herd with the rescued elephants. Unfortunately there is little space in South Africa for the new herds, but the herds go to places like Namibia and Zambia and are placed in protected reserves where they are monitored for about a year to ensure their safety. What amazing creatures they are.
We started off the morning brushing the elephants

Although Luke was a little wary of the animals, he was brave enough to touch them

We walked with them hand in trunk. It's so wierd because you actually hold their trunk partly inside so you can feel their warm breath each time they exhale. The walk also gives you a clear feeling of how strong their trunk muscles are.

After the walk, we fed them some nuts, they love them and kind of grab them from you - I thought it was quite freaky. They hold them with their trunk and bring them to their mouth to eat them.

What beautiful Gentle Giants they are

Simba and Luke had a great time

We all did!

And by the end Luke was ready for a nice morning nap in the car ride home.
